The button box represents power and teaches the lesson of the location of true power. Even though Gwendy believes this box has special powers, Farris gives her the box to prove to her that objects do not have the power to do good or evil deeds or to force people to do good or evil. It is people, with their good or evil intentions, that use these objects to attain their desires.
