When Sam is living in New York she lives in a lavish apartment that costs $2,000 a month to rent. This represents the wealth and privilege that Sam is being forced to give up when she’s furloughed and has to spend the year in Virginia. In comparison, Sam is living in an apartment above a garage once she moves to the mountains.
