Bill Peek's virtual reality system, the AG 12, is a symbol of the privileges afforded to him as the son of an employee of the Program, and the vast chasm of difference between his life and the lives of Melinda and Aggie, the Felixstowe locals. They have never seen anything like the AG 12, whereas Bill views it as simply another perk of his father's job. When he takes pity on Aggie and tells her she can use the AG 12 to go wherever she wishes to go, she does not choose a fun or far-flung location as Bill would, but the site of her sister's funeral. The only thing that truly matters to her is paying her final respects.
