Who is Medusa from Faust and what is their importance?

Medusa is the mythological woman, who is best known for her hair..... which is made up of a multitude of snakes. Looking into Medusa's face will turn one into stone. Medusa almost succeeds in tricking Faust by appearing as Gretchen.
