As an academic text, focused solely on American history, the organizational structure of Generations is necessarily chronological, but thematic in its approach as well. Part of the effectiveness of the work lies in the continual reference to past generations, as each cycle is presented, in order to demonstrate the truly common characteristics of each generational cohort-group over time. While this necessarily lengthens the work, it is a necessary organizational factor if one is to grasp the full meaning of the book's themes.
