Grandgousier, the king of Utopia, is Gargantua's father. When he realizes that the old-fashioned education he has provided his son has driven him into maddened foolishness, he sends him to Paris with a tutor. Gargantua is summoned home when King Picrochole becomes a threat to his homeland.
