An important idea in "Confessions of a Southern Lady" is that of sexuality, though it does not develop until later in the book. When Florence is eight years old, she reads "Forever Amber" but is forced to ask her friend, Peg, to clarify the sex scenes since Florence knows nothing about sex. She still knows very little by high school, so when she learns the term hymen, she tries to read a Tampax manual to learn more, but Jensy catches her and tells her to keep herself pure for Jesus.
