The Black Brides are a symbol of the Maegor's cruelty, and of the problematic nature of marriage in a misogynistic culture like Westeros. After failing to produce an heir, Maegor takes three wives toward the end of his reign. They are all widows who have proven themselves able to bear children. He is responsible for two of their husbands deaths.
