The Virgin Mary is a motif that we see throughout the story. Dunstan sees Mary Dempster as a Virgin-figure that has both upset his life and saved his life. This motif carries into Dunstan's obsession with hagiography or the study of saints. Themes of purity and lost purity are also attached to the motif of the Virgin Mary.
