Mattie wakes to her mother's insistent shouts to get up and her complaints that Mattie is lazy. Then she is bitten by a mosquito and hits he head on the sloped ceiling. The weather is hot, the water used to wash up is dirty and her clothes are too small. Silas the cat kills a mouse that Mattie must dispose of before the cat eats it on her mother's quilt.
