Why does Bathsheba fire Gabriel Oak from his position on the farm in Chapter 20?

Bathsheba goes to Gabriel to ask his advice about Mr. Boldwood’s marriage proposal. She is shocked when Gabriel is honest with her and criticizes her behavior in having toyed with Boldwood’s emotions by sending the Valentine. Insulted, Bathsheba fires him.
