This chapter is rife with sexual innuendo from the title, “The Hollow Amid the Ferns,” to the actions of Sergeant Troy. Troy has solicited Bathsheba to meet him to watch him demonstrate sword exercises which itself is an innuendo. Likewise, in placing Bathsheba in a position of weakness, there is a sadistic element to the scene also.
