What does Bathsheba assist Gabriel in doing in Chapter 37? Why?

As a storm appears to be approaching, Gabriel has discovered that the harvested grains have not been properly stored. He begins building a roof over the corn and grain by himself because everyone else is passed out drunk. Soon, Bathsheba helps him by bringing him thatches for the roof.
