How does Bathsheba respond when she is confronted by Gabriel in Chapter 32?

When Gabriel and Jan finally track down the “horse thief,” it turns out to be Bathsheba. She claims that she attempted to wake the servants in the house but was unable. Thus, she took a horse and cart with the intention of going to Bath. She sends the men home.
