  1. What happens if the natural opposites are NOT abided by in a text? (think: Shrek) What does it do to our understanding of the text as we read/watch it?

Other than character foil there is Antithesis: an effective literary and rhetorical device, as it pairs exact opposite or contrasting ideas by utilizing the parallel grammatical structure. I suppose the narrative loses that sense of natural conflict without an opposite.
