What is the main conflict in Endymion by Dan Simmons?

The novel's main conflict is centered around Raul's struggles with his view of who he should be versus who he is. He has a vision of himself as a protector and is repeatedly forced into situations where he is dependent and being protected. He finally becomes comfortable with the fact that he cannot always be the hero.
