How did Mental treat the children who worked for him in the novel, Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line?

Mental was the "boss-man" to about twenty children when he was alive, and although he could be tough with them, he almost never raised his hand to any of them and he bought them treats and made sure they were well-fed.
