While Bud sexually desires Holly, he cannot force himself to imagine giving up everything he has worked for with his wife to live in near squalor with Holly. It is clear to the reader that Bud is in the affair for the excitement of having an affair, not because he loves Holly enough to emotionally tear apart his entire family. This seems to foreshadow a break up between Holly and Bud, leaving the reader wondering what kind of impact that might have on the danger beginning to stalk Bud and on the family he has chosen over lust.
