Dear Martin consists of twenty-five numbered chapters, eight letters to Martin, six news transcripts and articles, and the "Four Months Later" section at the end. The whole is divided into two parts, where Part One is slightly longer than Part Two. In the plot, the division occurs just after the shooting scene, so that the reader does not know the complete outcome until several pages into Part Two. The letters are dated and set off in a font that mimics hand-printed lettering. They are signed inconsistently, sometimes as "Justyce," sometimes as "J," and sometimes as "JM." The news articles are titled and usually have a byline. They are set in a sans-serif font to contrast with the body text.
