Who is Hettie, and how did she die in the novel, Deacon King Kong?

Hettie is the wife of Sportcoat. She passed away two years before the opening of the novel. Hettie disappeared during a snowstorm in 1967 when she saw a light floating around her apartment. She followed it outside, believing it was God's light. Two days later, she would found floating in the harbor.
