Appearances can be deceiving is a recurring idea in the book. Not everything is as it appears to be in Tarker's Mills. Milt Sturmfuller, the seemingly mild-mannered librarian, physically abuses his wife. A 10-year-old boy in a wheelchair turns out to be the only person capable of figuring out the identity of the werewolf and ultimately killing him. The town's only law enforcement officer overlooks the single piece of evidence that could identify the werewolf. And most strikingly, the pastor of the Baptist church is actually a werewolf who kills a number of the local residents, including the custodian of his church.
