Who is Ma from Creature of the Night and what is their importance?

Ma is Robert's mother, she remains unnamed throughout the text. Her two sons have different fathers, and she has never been married. Ma desires a close relationship with her sons, and she wishes the two boys were closer to each other. She is, however, lacking in parenting skills. In addition, Ma is verbally abusive toward Dennis when he wets the bed or disobeys her instructions.
