The main themes in the novel are centered around various social issues of modern urban life — the impact of strong career interests on personal life; the effects of divorce or other disrupted relationships on a person's ability to form meaningful, long-term bonds with others; the effects of unbridled drives for money, for sexual gratification, or for power over other people, and the effects of racial and gender stereotyping on people's lives and relationships.
