What does Earth represent?

Earth represents the failures of humanity. As a desolate wasteland, it shows the dangers of selfish desires and fanatical greed. It is their shameful past that drives the remnants of humanity to the universe that the Old Empire abandoned. Ironically, while the ancestors tried to destroy the other terraforming projects, earth itself became a failed planet. Without any terraforming technology left, the planet is doomed to die.
