Tyshaun lives in the troubled Southeast neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The rapid gentrification of D.C. has not yet reached his neighborhood, and half of the children live in poverty (4). Tyshaun learned as a young child what it was like to be shot at, and he has never forgotten it. The greatest loss of his young life is the loss of his father, Andrew McPhatter. Since his father was shot and killed, Tyshaun has had a much harder time at school, sometimes erupting in rages and throwing chairs. It has been harder to focus in school, and he has to leave his classroom sometimes to calm down. Tyshaun's teachers are concerned that after he graduates from 3rd grade, his future teachers will not understand his erratic behavior.
