Why does Zinnie believe that she is responsible for her aunt and cousin's deaths?

Zinnie contracts whooping cough, and her cousin, Rose, contracts it soon after. Thus, Zinnie blames herself for Rose's death.

Zinnie uses a snake to frighten her aunt... playing a prank. When her aunt dies, she blames herself for scaring her to death.
