The story is told in chronological order, beginning with the first time Margot and Robert meet, and ending with Robert texting the word “whore” to Margot. Although the narrative is told in the past tense there is no sense that Margot is looking back on this encounter with hindsight having learned from the incident. Instead, Margot’s internal monologue is frequently occupied with projecting into a future when she can laugh about the encounter, whilst she still feels unhappy about it in her present moment: “she imagined that somewhere, out there in the universe, there was a boy who would think that this moment was just as awful yet hilarious as she did, and that sometime, far in the future, she would tell the boy this story”.
