How does the author use irony in the book, Blackouts: A Novel?

One example of irony can be found in the author's portrayal of The Palace. The Palace is a place that we would expect to be the image of long ago, a place where kings and queens roamed through its halls, when in reality, it is simply a crumbling structure in the midst of the desert.
