The reader learns that the pilot is somewhat superficial because of the pilot’s first impression of the nurse. When the pilot sees the nurse, the narrator describes his thought process, which shows that the pilot sees the nurse as “not good looking, but she was large and clean” (303). The fact that the nurse’s attractiveness is what the pilot observes first, combined with the fact that the pilot admires her cleanliness in spite of her looks, shows that the pilot prioritizes superficial features of a person.
