Pehn's property represents the changing landscape of Bangkok. At the start of the novel's timeline, it is undeveloped land. By the mid-twentieth century, it houses a beautiful mansion and garden. By the late 1970s, the developers destroy the mansion and build a high-rise condominium which represents modernity and the new popularity of the city. Less than a hundred years later, the building, much like Bangkok, no longer exists.
