Ghosts represent the past. Pehn has sleepless night claiming that the spirits in her house are upset with her as she is considering selling the house. To Pehn, these ghosts are really her own guilt. By selling the house she is selling away the legacy of her ex-husband's family--one that was built nearly one hundred years before her. Furthermore, ghosts represent the past because the belief in them is considered superstitious and old-fashioned; indeed, Gai's coworkers laugh at him when they learn that his uncle believes in ghosts. The developing Bangkok has little tolerance for such archaic superstitions.
