Jazz and music are powerful symbols of possibility in the novel. Indeed, when Pehn first meets Apirak, they dance to Clyde Alston's music, and their destinies are forever intertwined afterward. Clyde himself is transformed by his own playing; when he is at Pehn's house, the music moves his thoughts to the past, and Clyde wonders about reuniting with Morris.
