Who is the Old Man in the poem, A Lover’s Complaint?

The Old Man interrupts the young woman while she grieves her relationship. He is out herding cattle, but because of his age, he feels able to approach the young woman out of a sense of idle curiosity. He proves a sympathetic, and sorely needed, listener.
