The very first device (metaphor) is that of the carriage that Death picks the narrator up in. IN a way it is as if she is on a date...suggesting that each of us courts Death, or are courted by Death throughout our lives. The images that they pass by as they are in the carriage are also symbolic. Children (younger years), grain ripening in the field (productive years), and then the chill in the air (old age).
