Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

At the same time the US government was dealing with the issue of how to deal with the Native American population, it was also dealing with the issue of slavery and racial issues involving the black population. Compare and contrast the way the US Government dealt with the Native American issues and issues with the black population.

Essay Topic 2

Put yourself in the mindset of Army officials and explain why it was totally unacceptable to allow an Indian tribe like the Nez Perces to move off of the reservation and into Canada.

Relate the events of at least one Indian massacre of whites, and at least one white massacre of Native Americans. In each case how do you think the killers found justification for their actions? Which side was more justified in the actions you chose? Explain your answer.
