Objective

Objective: Boston Mercy _The World According to Garp_ hits the ground running, with well-defined characters and a quickly moving plot. Making sure students understand the basics of the novel when they first start reading it is critical for their later understanding. The objective of this lesson is to familiarize students with the basics of the novel (setting, time, etc.) as well as with John Irving and his style of writing.

1) Begin class with a focusing exercise. Have students write for five minutes on the following prompt: "What are the basic facts of the novel, as you understand them (such as where it is taking place and what year it begins). What characters do you know of so far? What is unclear to you? What or whom do you want more information about?" Collect their responses.
