Lesson 1 (from December 1819)

Objective

December 1819

There are a number of instances of foreshadowing in Wolf by the Ears. For example, in December 1819, we see Sally protecting Jefferson from the cold with a shawl and from possible illness with medicine, which foreshadows the way Sally will protect the secret of who Harriet's father is. The objective of this lesson is to define foreshadowing and discuss elements of foreshadowing seen in this section of the novel.

Lesson

1. Definition: Ask the class to define the term "foreshadowing." Write ideas on the board as they are offered. Next, ask a student to read the dictionary definition. Provide additional clarification as necessary.

2. In-Class Discussion: What interactions do we see between Sally and Jefferson? What might her protection of Jefferson from the cold and illness foreshadow? What might Sally's conversation with Jefferson, which excludes Harriet, foreshadow?

3. In-Class Essay: Write an essay discussing the elements of foreshadowing...
