Objective

The objective of this lesson is to discuss Emani's pregnancy, and what is revealed about stereotypes. When Emani gets pregnant, people felt she was a public service announcement for what happens when someone is promiscuous.

Lesson

Class Discussion: When did Emoni become pregnant? Was she promiscuous? How did people stereotype her when she became pregnant? What did people assume about her? How did people use her as an example of what happens when someone is promiscuous and makes bad choices? Were the stereotypes they tried to use to describe Emoni correct? What is revealed about stereotypes?

Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group discuss why Emoni thought she was "that girl" (21). Why did Emoni think people would have warned other girls to stay away from her? Why would moms not want their daughters to be friends with Emoni? Why was she "that girl...
