Objective

Objective: From the very start of the novel, the author paints a vivid picture of the main character, Hazel Motes. The objective of this lesson is to identify and analyze the Hazel's characteristics (physical and personality).

1) Divide the class into small groups. Ask each group to create a visual representation of Hazel's character as it is presented in this first chapter. They can either create a detailed drawing of the character or create an abstract representation of his character. Tell them their drawing must focus on showing his physical and personality traits. Have groups share their visual representations with the class.

2) Class discussion: Which of Haze's traits "jump out" at you as you are reading this chapter? Why? What role do you think that these traits will play in the novel? Is Haze a sympathetic character (so far)? Why or why not?
