Objective

Chapter 1

This first chapter provides the frame story for the novel. The objective of this lesson is to understand the frame story and to predict the relationship between it and the main plot line.

Lesson

1) Teacher Lecture: Provide an introduction to the literary device of a frame story (if necessary).

2) Group Activity: Have students work in groups of three to five and draw a comic strip version of this first chapter. Ask them to share their comic strips with the class. Tell students this scene is the frame for the larger plot line of the story (which will be introduced in the next chapter).

3) Class Activity: Review the final scene of the chapter with students (where the old man sits down next to the fire).
