Marya Tilman's dragonling occurred in the United States on September 18, 1898. To celebrate an engagement, a lemonade social was being held in the garden of Mrs. Tilman's next-door neighbors. A daguerreotype showed the dragonling at its midpoint.

2. What was Alex's experience when she met a dragon, and what did she learn from the experience?

Alex was four when she first met a dragon. There was a little old lady who lived across the alley from her family. Alex liked to visit her, and they often spent time together. One day after hearing a raucous, Alex opened the back gate and walked into the old lady's yard. She saw a dragon sitting and staring at itself. Alex asked the dragon where the old lady was. The dragon winked and held a finger to its jaws as though to say, "Shhh" (9). Then it flew away. Alex never saw the old lady again, and no one ever mentioned her. Alex learned from the experience to be quiet about dragons.
