Objective

The objective of this lesson is to discuss cyanide and arsenic and the connection between art and poison. A chemist created cyanide by mixing the color Prussian Blue with sulphuric acid. Paints made from arsenic and used in toys and interior decoration sickened and killed.

Class Discussion: What was the pigment that was used to create cyanide? How were both great financial successes? Why did both become so popular--one for art and the other for killing? What is arsenic? How was arsenic used in a paint pigment? What color was created by using the arsenic-based pigment? Why was it toxic and deathly? Why is there a connection between art and poison?
