Objective

This book takes place in Africa the late 1800's. The author does a good job establishing this time frame and describing the character's lives during that time period. The objective of this lesson is to learn about that time period and how it differs from today.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: What year does When the Lion Feeds start? What is the environment? Where does the story take place? What was the world like? How is it different from today?

2. Groups: Have the students break into groups of three or four. Have them discuss the differences between life in the late 1800's versus their lives today. What do they have and can't live without today? Would there be an equivalent in the 1800's? What would that equivalent be? What would they miss the most?

3. Individual: Have the students list tools, equipment, transportation options, medical options, and food...
