The Narrator

This seven-year-old is the unnamed storyteller and main character of the novel. Throughout the course of the novel, this character speaks in first-person and recounts familial events of his past and how they lead him to his current position and understanding of identity.

Manny

This is the main character's aggressive and cunning older brother. He is the leader of the three brothers and usually leads them into troublesome situations. Due to accusations of the main character being "different" from the other brothers, an unfortunate distance is created between this character and the main character.

Ma

This character is seen as a hardworking, yet sometimes unstable and emotional, mother of the main character and the two brothers. Attempting to keep the family together, this character takes care of the brothers to the best of character's abilities, but has trouble while balancing personal responsibilities.
