Part 1: Chapter 1

• Travis Cornell comes to Santiago Canyon to attempt to reclaim some of the joy of life he knew as a small boy when he would explore the canyon when his family lived there

• Travis begins hiking down a deer trail when he comes to an area in which the sun is blotted out by trees

• A dog suddenly appears and barks at Travis until he steps back

• Travis admonishes the dog, trying to get it to move out of the way, but the dog acts as a barrier between him and the continuation of the path

• When Travis attempts to walk between the dog and the rest of the trail, it grabs his pant leg in its teeth and pulls him away

• Travis becomes annoyed, but notices the dogs obvious fear and hears a strange sound of something big in the woods
