Chapter 1, The Picture in the Bedroom

From the very first chapter it becomes clear that there is a great deal of fantasy attached to the book. This is hinted at when Edmund and Lucy discuss Narnia, but the fantasy tone comes through when the children are literally placed inside a picture on the wall. This lesson will discuss the role of fantasy in the book.

1.Group Discussion: Have the class split into groups of four and discuss the role of fantasy in the book. In what ways is a fantasy driven theme presented in the first chapter? What reasons might the author have for presenting such subject matter as morals and duty in a fantasy setting? How can Eustace's belief that stories of Narnia are all fantasy be taken two different ways?
