Objective
The objective of this lesson is to discuss why Violeta needed discipline when she was little, and what she discovered about the benefits of discipline. Violeta was dreadfully spoiled from the time she was born until she was five. A governess was hired to teach her discipline.

Class Discussion: How does Miss Taylor react when Violeta throws temper tantrums? How does she teach her to dress and feed herself? Why does Violeta comment that "the monster that had grated on the nerves of the entire household had become a normal little girl" (25)? Why does Violeta refer to the first years of her life as a "tug of war" (27)? Why did she not feel safe or protected?
