Objective

Georgette Heyer was an English author famous for her historical romance and detective stories. Heyer is credited with establishing the historical romance genre, and Regency romance genres of which "Venetia" is an example. This lesson discusses the author of "Venetia," Georgette Heyer.

Lesson

1) Library research: Have the students research the author, Georgette Heyer. Explore the other works she has written, as well as her personal background. Take a look at biographical information, interviews and critical essays to gain information on her writing and where "Venetia" fits in with her other novels.

2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Heyer and her canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different novels written by Heyer during their presentation. At the end of the presentations, have students compare the tone and style of "Venetia" With Heyer's other works.

3) Class discussion: Discuss...
