Objective

Jude Deveraux is the writer of historical fiction and her career has spanned many decades. Many of her novels, including Velvet Song follow the same family, the Montgomerys. This lesson discusses the author of Velvet Song, Jude Deveraux.

Lesson

1) Library research: Have the students research the author, Jude Deveraux. Explore the other works she has written, as well as her background. Take a look at interviews and other sources to gain information on her writing and where Velvet Song fits in with her other novels.

2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Deveraux and her canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different novels written by Deveraux during their presentation. At the end of the presentations, have students compare the tone and style of Velvet Song With Deveraux's other works.
