Students will make connections with the text and history. This objective is occurring in the beginning of the book because it will provide background information for the students and help them better understand the situations in the novel.

1) Class Lesson: Give a brief history of how WWII really changed the role of women in the workplace. Anne has a college education and is not worried about trying to find a job. Discuss with your class how this is a very different view than one her mother would have held. At the same time, Anne strives to be a secretary and really nothing more.
